Driven by the textures of identity, culture, and upbringing, my work combines portraiture, storytelling, and video and disrupts it with a sensibility of color, playfulness, and mixed media. Using collage, object, personal history, and words, I look to these visual signifiers to create a nostalgic, poetic, and cathartic space from which to better understand my place in the world and to infuse my subjects with the collaborative possibility of their own empowerment and self-preservation with fantasy.
It’s derailing to continuously show up and hear "we love your work, how are you not getting hired, do you have an agent" while watching less qualified, better networked colleagues get jobs and make career strides. I see who opportunities are given to and it continuously brings out the deepest imposter syndrome. While I believe in what I do and have my network of fellow POC to call on, I get frustrated that despite all the support we circulate around to each other, we still aren’t positioned as viable options in image-making with career sustainability.
