As an artist and educator, I'm interested in discerning what depictions and documents have been left out of contemporary visual culture by thinking critically about how my communities are named, pictured, described and by whom. What bodies are understood and accepted as queer? Or as belonging in lush urban spaces? Who is understood as having time and deserving of leisure? I begin from a place of questioning.
Being in this industry is relentless. In my first year as a full-time freelancer I wanted to give up many times for reasons that can feel inhumane – I’ve considered going back to my stable day job to cover basic needs like good health insurance. I want to work in an industry where we aren’t always so tired and working all the time. I’m looking forward to figuring out how to create a more balanced future for myself and others.
