My work focuses on the Black experience and trying to bridge the gap between the motherland and the diaspora. In such a sensitive political climate, it’s very important as a black person to feel safe in the company of others who look like you. That can’t happen if we don’t know anything about the other persons’ culture or way of life, and it works both ways. I’m trying to create work that blurs those lines of difference and brings us all together.
I believe in the power of controlling our own narratives and I like to see when stories are commissioned to people who are prominent in the communities being documented or can at least have an honest relation and interaction with the subjects.
