At this point, most of us recognize that the photography industry has historically been dominated by a singular homogeneous voice. We are now living in an exciting time when the very conversations about who is included and valued in institutional art spaces has been expanded by the creative, communal and activist work of people of color.
My dream commission would be working with the Star Wars franchise to document underrepresented fans and redraw the boundaries of inclusion. With the recent expansion of characters of color in the Star Wars universe, there is a growing number of admirers who are participating in fan communities. This shift has been both celebrated and challenged. Therefore this work is an important way to reimagine race, class, gender, sexuality and size. Being featured in revered publications like the New York Times, National Geographic or Aperture magazine would be invaluable in helping empower fans of color.
