I’m interested in documentary photography and in the meaning of photography itself. The first is important to me because it allows me to tell stories that are important to me and other people who find those stories significant. With the damage that photography as a medium has done to Africa, I also find it important to question it as well. I’m currently exploring on a little bit of both sides.
I find the term 'the industry' a very strange one because living here in Ethiopia, I rarely experience the existence of it, but from the virtual experience I’ve had, I think there’s pressure on African photographers right now to produce works that fit into a certain narrative, get approval from the community or sometimes become the tool for institutions who just want to pull the diversity card. I’m not sure if defending that gravity pull should come from within or outside but I believe that the minute 'the industry' starts to exist here in a tangible form, only then I’d feel that I’m supported.
